TRANSITION... WHAT AM I GOING TO HAVE TO DO?
We encourage all responders that will be participating in the transition process to visit the official Kansas EMS Transition Website at http://kansasemstransition.com. This website is provided by the Friesen Group, the developers of the Kansas EMS Transition Program Courses. At this website you can review and obtain various documents related to the transition process and review the curriculum of the various transition programs.
If you would like a quick overview, here's the rundown on what is required to transition at each certification level:
KS CERTIFIED FIRST RESPONDERS
Certified First Responders will transition to Certified Emergency Medical Responder (EMR).
-The FR to EMR transition course consists of 16 hours of transition course training.
-Current First Responders whose certification will expire December 31st of 2010 must complete the current standards for re-certification before their 2010 expiration date. After doing so, you will be issued a new certification that will expire December 31st, 2012 and then you MUST complete your transition training prior to December 31st, 2012.
-Current First Responders whose certification will expire on December 31st, 2011
MUST complete transition training prior to December 31st, 2011.
KS CERTIFIED EMT-BASICS (EMT-B)
Certified EMT-Bs will transition to EMT
-The EMT-B to EMT transition course consists of 28 hours of transition course training.
-Current EMT-Bs whose certification will expire December 31st of 2010 must complete the current standards for re-certification before their 2010 expiration date. After doing so, you will be issued a new certification that will expire December 31st, 2012 and you MUST complete your transition training prior to December 31st, 2012
--Current EMT-Bs whose certification will expire on December 31st, 2011
MUST complete transition training prior to December 31st, 2011.
KS CERTIFIED EMT-INTERMEDIATES (EMT-I)
Certified EMT-Is will transition to Advanced EMT (AEMT)
-The EMT-I to AEMT transition course represents the most significant academic and time commitment of the Kansas Scope of Practice Transition. In order to transition from EMT-I to AEMT the attendant must complete 116 hours of transition course training.
PLEASE REMEMBER: Although the time allowed to complete the EMT-I to AEMT transition is longer than the time allowed for the other transition levels (due to the significantly higher content requirements) the current Butler County EMST Transition Plan will offer the courses necessary to transition to AEMT during 2011, so please plan on completing your AEMT transition in 2011!
-Current EMT-Is whose certification will expire December 31st of 2010 must complete the current standards for re-certification before their 2010 expiration date. After doing so, you will be issued a new certification that will expire December 31st, 2012. After that, you MUST complete your transition training prior to December 31st, 2014
-Current EMT-Is whose certification will expire on December 31st, 2011
MUST complete transition training prior to December 31st 2013.
Remember, despite these allowed time frames, plan on completing your EMT-I to AEMT transition in 2011!
KS CERTIFIED MICTs
After the new Kansas Scope of Practice is enacted, the title "Mobile Intensive Care Technician" or MICT will no longer be utilized in Kansas. Instead, certified MICTs will be referred to legally as "Paramedic." However, other than this title change, current MICT certified EMS attendants are NOT required to complete any transition courses and will only need to obtain their usual continuing education. After 2010, your certification card will change in title to "Paramedic."
