An organized group of individuals dedicated to providing rescue services to the people of Butler County was first formed in 1975 with volunteer members from local police agencies and the EMS department (or "Ambulance Company"). Since then, the organization and cooperation of rescue units throughout Butler County has continued to grow into one of the most respected and well-known rescue organizations in Kansas.
The Rescue Division of Butler County EMS operates two primary units from the El Dorado EMS Station. Rescue 15, a large multi-use rescue unit, can provide the manpower and tools for vehicle extrication, heavy rescue, high and low-angle rescue, search-and-rescue and many other fundamental rescue services to any location in the county. This primary rescue unit is joined by other rescue units that work in cooperation with one another and are based in various locations around the county. All these units together are known collectively as the "Rescue Squad" and are organized into "divisions" that are each operated by various emergency services around the county. These other rescue units (or divisions) are operated by the Augusta Department of Safety, the Andover Fire Department, and the Rose Hill Fire Department.
The other rescue unit based in El Dorado and operated as a division of Butler County EMS is Rescue 16, the primary water rescue response vehicle for the county, and two rescue boats (Rescue 1 and 2). The water rescue specialized personnel of the Rescue Squad conduct general water rescue operations, dive rescue, and water search and rescue. In addition, The Augusta Department of Safety operates Rescue 3 (another rescue boat) and is home to a large and highly specialized dive rescue team.
The rescue personnel and units of the Butler County Rescue Squad not only provide highly skilled rescue services within Butler County, but have also been called to assist in rescue operations around the state. In the past, elements of the Rescue Squad have responded more than one hundred miles outside of Butler County to assist in highly technical or manpower-intensive rescue operations. This dedication to the art of rescue and service to citizens, anywhere and anytime, has made the Butler County Rescue Squad one of the most well-respected rescue teams in the state.
